Diversifying Your Portfolio: Do More with Less

As nonfiction writers, we generally think in two modes of production: book-length and short form. Yet there are many avenues in between and with alternatives for expanding our audiences and broadening our craft. This session shares how to branch out within the genre to diversify publication opportunities, tap into multiple markets with single ideas, supplement income with spin-off opportunities, and utilize audio, video, and other e-media to further your platform and audience reach.

Lori A. May is the author of several books, including The Write Crowd: Literary Citizenship & The Writing Life (Bloomsbury) and The Low-Residency MFA Handbook: A Guide for Prospective Creative Writing Students (Continuum). Her work may also be found in publications including The AtlanticBrevity, and Writer’s Digest. She is a freelance writer, consultant, and editor, and has worked with Poets’ Quarterly, Kaylie Jones Books (an imprint of Akashic Books), Creative NonfictionNorthern Poetry Review, and several small press authors. Lori is a faculty mentor in the MFA program at the University of King’s College-Halifax and a publishing internship supervisor with the Wilkes University MA and MFA writing programs. Canadian by birth and disposition, Lori now lives and writes in Seattle. For more info, visit www.loriamay.com.
