"What's Wrong with History and Biography?" Charlotte Gray asks Ken Whyte (publisher, Sutherland House) and  Dan Wells (publisher, Biblioasis) about the state of "researched nonfiction" in Canada.

CHARLOTTE GRAY, one of Canada’s pre-eminent biographers and historians, has won many awards for her work, including the prestigious Pierre Berton Award for a body of historical writing. In ten bestsellers, including biographies Sisters in the Wilderness and Reluctant Genius: The Passionate Life of Alexander Graham Bell and intriguing narratives such as The Museum Called Canada and The Massey Murder, she has brought our past to vivid life. Charlotte is a Member of the Order of Canada.

DAN WELLS calls himself “the accidental publisher.” But his company, Windsor-based literary press Biblioasis is a deliberate success, helped to reach its objectives by being loyal to writers and serving specific reader markets. The 14-year-old independent book publisher is thriving and publishes some 30 books each year, thanks to a slate of diverse Canadian and international writers who create audience-appealing materials that set Biblioasis apart.

KEN WHYTE founded Sutherland House in 2017, a Toronto-based publisher of non-fiction books for global English-language audiences. Specializing in narrative works of biography, memoir, history, business, culture, and current affairs, they will publish sixteen books in 2022. Whyte is an author and former editor in chief of Maclean’s magazine, editor of the monthly Saturday Night magazine, and founding editor of the National Post.
